Fauna of Honduras

Honduras is immensely rich in fauna, many descriptions of this abundant wildlife exist from the early colonial period. Even further back this abundant wildlife played a role of great importance in the day to day lives of the pre-columbian societies of Honduras. This importance can be seen today in the many archeaology sites, artifacts and the still used traditions and culturals of these ethnic groups.
Honduras is home to many diverse ecological systems such as cloudforest, reefs, mangroves, savannas, tropical dry forest, pine forest and the species rich tropical forest. This vast range of habitats is home to some 225 mammal species, monkeys, jaguars, ocelots, pumas, sloths, armadillos, ant-eaters, deer, and bats are only a small sample of the diversity of mammals that inhabit Honduras. 100 Anfibians and 196 Reptiles species are alos found in Honduras, this group includes such species as the barba amarillo, coral snake, iguana, caiman, crocodiles and hawksbill and leatherback turles.

There is even more, 715 bird species are found in Honduras. It is hard to name all the beatuiful and impressive birds that are found in Honduras, as there is far to many. Macaws, tocans, quetzals, motmots, parrots, tanagers, orioles, herons, ibis, terns and kingfishers are all found as are many other common and rare species.

Currently there are more than 100 protected areas in Honduras. These national parks, biospheres and wildlife reserves offer an unforgettabe experience and the perfect environment for wildlife observation and wildlife observers.
