Ceiba
The Ceiba tree is known as the sacred tree of the Mayas. Its bigger and
deep roots represent for the ancient Mayas, the underworld. Its trunk,
the human presence on earth and its branches reaching to the sky represent
the heavens. The religious significance of the Ceiba for the Mayas is
compared with the meaning of the cross for Christians. Actually The Ceiba
is Guatemala’s national tree, Guatemala is home to the largest number
of Mayan descendants in Central America.
La Ceiba is a deciduas species, distributed widely in the tropical regions
of the world. Its found in rainforests, specially secondary forest. The
young trees have notable vertical branches with big conic prickles in
the trunk.
The old trees are easy recognizable by its enormous trunk. These older
trees can reach around 40 meters in height with a trunk diameter on average
2 mts. Ceiba wood is used for making many products, plywood, paper products,
boxes, conues, and rafts. The kapok or cotton that is produced by its
fruits are used widely to fill pillows, car seats and life jackets.
