The Foundation PROLANSATE (Protection of Lancetilla, Punta Sal and Texsiguat) is a non-governmental organization based in Tela. Originally set up by Peace Corps volunteers, it is now operated by local personnel. Their mission is to protect and educate in conjunction with community development and ecotourism. The former director Jaenette Kawas has been assassinated in 1997 because she raised her voice against the interest of farmers, plantation owners and cattle breeders. The responsible people have never been found. As most of the NGOs the Foundation PROLANSATE works in tight cooperation with the local population. PROLANSATE is a member of REHDES a red of seven NGOs based on the north coast of Honduras.
