Bairds Tapir
A large mammal with a big and robust body, that can weigh up to 300
kg. They have a flattened head that finishes in a short trumpet snout,
small eyes, short erect ears, small mouths, robust necks, in general great
muscular force and strength. Their skin is thick with a thin coat of hair.
Bairds Tapirs smell and hearing are exceptional good, but their sight
is very poor.
A nocturnal, solitary animal, that is very shy a basically harmless. They
spend the day resting in dense vegetation. Around dusk they emerge to
forage for food. A vegetarian that eats mainly, leaves, aquatic plants,
fresh shots and a variety of fruits. The male and female are only together
to mate. Pregnancy lasts for 13 months. The young is breastfeed for 6
months after birth and remains with the mother for up to 2 or 3 years.
Bairds Tapir where once found in large numbers through out Honduras. Now
they are very rare and in endanger of extinction. Jaguars, Ocelots and
Pumas hunt for the Bairds Tapir. But their main threat is from humans
who hunt for their meat. Also habitat destruction is a big problem for
the species survival.
