White Faced Monkey
The smallest of the monkeys found in Honduras weighing 2.5 to 3.5 kgs.
A very agile creature. Their shoulders, upper chest and face are white
while the rest of the body is black to dark brown. White faced monkeys
spends most of their time in treetops. They are a very social able animal
and can sometime be found in groups of 2 to 25 individuals. A highly intelligent
animal, their intelligence is at times compared to that of a chimpanzee.
An omnivore that prefers to eat fruits, leafs and flowers at times they
will eat small insects and raid birds nests for eggs. Sexual maturity
is reached in 3-4 years. Female gives birth to young at 1 to 2 year intervals.
Young achieve independence at 5-6 months of age

Found through out the tropical and dry forests of eastern and central
Honduras. With the largest populations being found in the Mosquita and
the Department of Olancho. All the large carnivores hunt for the white
faced monkey, also at times humans capture the monkey to have or sell
as a pet. It’s biggest threats though comes from habitat destruction.
Most of Honduras protected areas have white faced monkey populations.
The highest densities though are found in departments of Olancho, Gracias
de Dios and the Pico Bonito area.
